MOKOKO X for PC: The Review

With the laugh-out-loud writing, weird characters, absurd storylines, and nostalgic gameplay, Mokoko X carries on the arcade genre and makes the journey fun every step of the way for the players.

Nostalgia at its funniest? Yes. Mokoko X, a kickstarted project, brings a new breath to the long-awaited nostalgic feelings that any gamer might have. And with a really low price, we might add. So, what is this Mokoko X, and why are we talking about it?

Mokoko X is an indie game that’s very simple in theory. The main objective of this funny PC game is to conquer as much space on the screen as possible to save some unlucky girls from some weird situations. Each girl tells her own story, has her own enemies and difficulty levels. The player needs to avoid the enemies or trap them inside the line to kill and reveal at least 70% of the picture.

STORY

This must be the hardest part of this blog: The Story. Each beautiful yet unlucky girl featured in Mokoko X has her own bad situation to tell. Some are running from stalkers, while others are terrified of insects. In between these hard situations, an exciting tale awaits the player. A story of two unlucky men who are stranded on an island… Let’s not spoil it.

THE GAMEPLAY

Bringing the arcade gameplay of the 1980’s and 1990’s to life, Mokoko X’s gameplay is easy to grasp yet addictive at the same time. There are two game modes to play. The first one is the story mode, where you’ll meet eight unlucky girls with their own stories to tell. You need to complete each girl’s story, which contains four chapters. But that’s another topic that we’ll dwell on later. After you complete the story mode, you’re ready to discover what arcane mode has in store for you.

The main part of the gameplay is conquering the bigger portion of the screen by drawing lines. Sounds easy? Think again! The screen is filled with weird enemies that will stop at nothing to put an end to your heroic quest. Trying the hard mode is the best option if you like a real challenge. While the easy and normal modes indeed make the game worth your while, the hard mode provides players with randomly occurring traps and even more ruthless enemies. However, the opponents you’ll encounter aren’t only the characters. The leaderboard feature will bring new opponents to the players who like to compete for the top score. The floor is yours. Let the games begin!

THE GIRLS

It’s time to meet the beautiful ladies of Mokoko X: Ayane, Ruby, Iren, Julia, Mei, Issa, Yoko, and Misaki. However, their beauty isn’t their only common trait. These girls are also extremely unlucky and deal with bizarre enemies that they can’t get rid of.

From being raised by a government facility to wanting to take control of their own lives, each character has their own story. Just keep your ears open. You may find out quite a lot about what misfortunes befall them just by listening to what they have to say. Once you get to know the girls, your mission begins.

THE ENEMIES

You know by now that Mokoko X focuses heavily on absurdity, and this aspect can especially (if not best) be seen on enemies. Each girl has three enemies you need to deal with, and each of them is funnier than the other ones. But first things first!

There are eight different girls, and each of them deals with specific and different enemies based on their story and characteristics. For example, one minute you’re fighting off the government forces, while the other minute you need to get rid of winged insects that drive Misaki crazy. Weird? Definitely! Fun? Extremely!

The names of these afflicters are when the real fun begins. Don’t you believe us? Then it’s time to present Ali Baba the Piece of Crap, Scorpion-pink.png the PNG File, Kabeer the Demonic Headphone, and all the other enemies that will make you laugh out loud.

Like the girls, these characters also have their own story, and it’s interconnected with the gameplay and levels. If you’re fighting against Scorpion-pink.png the PNG File, you’ll learn that he’s designed to make people watch ads. Guess who doesn’t like watching ads? No, not you, the unlucky lady you need to save. The game plays on this joke perfectly and puts ads on the top of the screen for this specific level. When the laugh-out-loud jokes meet with the character designs, you have crazy-looking enemies with even crazier lines.

ANIME-STYLE

If you’re playing an anime-style game, chances are you’re as much in this adventure for the art style as you’re for the action. Mokoko X certainly plays on this well and focuses on eight anime-style characters and combines this with colorful graphics and arcade gameplay. But this is certainly part of Mokoko X’s charm, making use of anime-syle and other iconic art styles.

ALL JOKES ASIDE

With the laugh-out-loud writing, weird characters, absurd storylines, and nostalgic gameplay, Mokoko X carries on a genre that hasn’t been active for years and makes the journey fun every step of the way for the players. The retro gameplay takes you on a trip down the memory lane and is addictive enough that you won’t be able to leave the screen until the game is over. This love letter to the arcade games might just be the lighthearted fun you need.
