One thing is for sure. Tiny Tina’s Wonderlands is one of the most anticipated games of this year, and as the calendars hit March 25, the time has finally come to indulge our curiosities. It’s been two and a half years since the release of Borderlands 3, and fans have been waiting for Borderlands 4 for quite some time. However, Gearbox had different plans in mind. But little did we know, that’s exactly what we needed.

Set in the immediate wake of Borderlands 2 DLC Tiny Tina’s Assault on Dragon Keep: A Wonderlands One-Shot Adventure this brand-new adventure is a looter shooter Borderlands game through a high-fantasy and Tiny Tina filter.

Tiny Tina’s Wonderlands is a D&D-inspired fantasy Borderlands spin-off set inside a Bunkers and Badasses tabletop campaign, and Tiny Tina serves as its Bunker Master. Created by one of the series’ best characters, Wonderlands is a magical playground that will excite, delight, and challenge you.

While the game’s ties to the Borderlands series give us a sense of familiarity, it also offers significant changes and a new direction for the series. Now, only one question remains. Since the game takes its cues from Tiny Tina’s Assault on Dragon Keep, a magical and critically-acclaimed DLC, will it live up to the success of its inspiration? Let’s dive deep into our review and find out about this world of fantasy.

Tiny Tina’s Big World

Following the game within a game concept, you are in the real Borderlands world playing a D&D-like game called Bunkers and Badasses with a couple of friends. So, this is how it basically goes. You’re a fictional character invented by a video game character and set out on a quest in a world created by another video game character. Wait, is that steam coming out of your head?

You’re the hero created by one of the Vault Hunter players, Valentine, and your world is made by Tiny Tina, who serves as its Bunker Master. With three games, multiple downloadable contents, and spin-off games, the Borderlands series has introduced many characters that captured the hearts of fans. However, few of these characters are as memorable as Tiny Tina.

Her changing the game’s rules on the fly makes everything much more unpredictable, fun, and exciting. Sometimes, the entire environment changes right before your eyes to accommodate her whims. And we couldn’t expect anything less from the world’s most dangerous 13-year-old. Aside from the eccentric, frantic, and unstable Tiny Tina that joins the picture as the tour guide, there are also other familiar faces like Butt Stallion and Mr. Torgue.

There are also newer characters that will join us along the ride, such as Valentine, Frette, and The Dragon Lord. What makes each character’s presence even more notable is their voice actors. Tiny Tina’s Wonderlands voice actors for these new characters are none other than Brooklyn Nine-Nine’s Andy Samberg, comedian Wanda Sykes, and Arrested Development’s Will Arnett. There is no need to say that Ashly Burch also reprises her role as Tina and does a beautiful job bringing the unreliable 13-year-old teenager to life. With one of the best comedy casts of any game, the voice acting is over-the-top and combines beautifully with excellent writing and hilarious moments. Wonderlands emphasizes that this is a fun game between friends with the comedy writing that we’re all familiar with from the Borderlands series, and you’re here to enjoy the ride.

Your primary objective is to stop the evil Dragon Lord, a powerful necromancer and Tina’s most powerful evil creation. This is where you come in, Fatemaker.

Skill Up Your Darlings

One of the differences between Wonderlands and Borderlands is the character creation. Rather than static classes, Wonderlands presents a unique and better system and crosses out each class being tied to a single character. You get to choose one of the six Tiny Tina’s Wonderlands classes, customize your look, and even choose a backstory that will adjust your Dungeons & Dragons-like starting stats. Now you’re ready to begin your adventure as the Fatemaker. As you progress through the game and level up, you’ll gain skill and hero points to specialize and improve your character the way you want.

How you choose to invest skill points as you level up makes up a considerable part of your playstyle. You can change these skills after an early plot moment and even select a secondary class that gives the players freedom to explore the chances and different outcomes. This ability to multiclass is a great addition and grants you access to a second skill tree, Action Skills, and Class Feat. Hero points are also essential and award you specific bonuses that refine how you play even further.

Roll for Initiative

When the franchise first debuted in 2009, Cliff Bleszinski, the creator of the Gears of War series, defined Borderlands as “Diablo for a generation raised on first-person shooters”. Thirteen years later, the same thing can still be said for Wonderlands.

The transition from science fiction and Mad Max aesthetic to high fantasy changed very little about the fact that this still is a Borderlands game. The gameplay still revolves around shooter-looter mechanics but with a fantasy sprinkle added to the mix. You need to level up by shooting your way through your enemies, and as you face tougher foes, you’ll level up even more. There are only a couple of changes made to fit the fantasy theme. Where Borderlands has shields, Wonderlands has Wards. Grenades have been replaced with magic spells, and magic armor and rings have taken the places of class mods and buff items.

The combat feels just as crazy as it did in Borderlands, with crazy-looking enemies and challenging boss fights. From zombies to sentient sharks, you’ll face off against a wide range of enemies. Since they have different weaknesses and strengths, you’ll need to acquire better loot to advance through the game’s quest-based story. While equipping more powerful loot is essential to building out your character, how your gear interacts with your other gears and class is where the real power unfolds. And considering players can also equip melee weapons now besides spells and guns, there’s a massive amount of loot in this game.

When you finish the story, you unlock the endgame activity called The Chaos Chamber. This randomly generated sequence of dungeons is about killing all the enemies and completing an optional objective which is excellent for loot and XP.

The Chaotic Great Wonderlands

With mushroom-filled gorges, high towers, and majestic castles, Wonderlands truly makes you feel like you’re inside a fantasy world and lets you bask in the beauty of locations such as Mount Craw, Tangledrift, and Brighthoof. When the beautiful places meet with incredible character designs and enemies like goblins, mushrooms with teeth, and sharks with legs, the final result becomes a beautiful world beyond your wildest dreams.

Between the main quests you’ll complete and areas you’ll explore, Overworld comes into play. Overworld mainly serves as a tool to travel between locations where your character is represented by a bobblehead-like figure and find new quests to complete. This expansive game board is observed in a bird’s-eye view and has its own mini-quests, micro dungeons, and secrets. Despite the open-world nature of this map, never forget, Tina is the one who’s calling the shots. The world around you can change instantly, leaving you with nothing to do but follow along and wait for the next adventure you’ll find yourself in.
